Job fairs can be a great place to network, get your resume out there, and see what types of job opportunities exist. However, they often attract a rather large crowd and employers don’t have much time to spend on one-on-one chats. It is important that job seekers make the most of the time they do get and ensure that their resume is a solid reflection of what they have to offer.
One of the most common pieces of job search advice is to tailor your resume for each job you are applying for; but when it comes to a job fair, how is this possible? You’re faced with many different companies and positions, so how can you make sure your resume packs a punch?
- Get a list of the companies participating ahead of time. This will often be made available to attract more applicants. Review various companies and select a few that you would be most interested in and do your research.
- Tailor your resume to the specific companies that you selected. While this may seem tedious, it can pay off. Remember that you don’t have to completely rewrite your resume – just tweak it to focus on how you align with what the company is looking for.
- Create resumes with more than one focus if you’re looking in different areas. If your job field is broad, have a resume customized to each type of role based the companies you want to apply with. For instance, you could have one resume for marketing jobs with non-profits and one for marketing jobs with for profits.
- Attach a cover letter for a more complete package. Once you’ve done your research and tailored your resume for a specific company, create a cover letter as well. This further emphasizes your interest and that you have put forth the effort to show why you’re a good fit.
- Develop a more general resume as well that gives a broader view of your abilities in case there are companies or job opportunities you are interested in that you didn’t know about ahead of time.
- Always get contact information for the employer so you can follow up. Jot down a few notes about your conversation to make it more personal. This not only helps you remember the employer but can also jog their memory about you.
Not every company will accept hardcopy resumes, so make sure you get the appropriate information to apply online, and don’t wait. Once you get home, put the finishing touches on your resume and cover letter and send it off. Use the job fair as a chance to explore different companies and job possibilities and get your foot in the door.
