The year is starting to wind to a close. Summer vacation is over, the kids are back in school, and fall and winter holidays are quickly approaching. Before you get caught up making Halloween costumes, deciding who’s cooking the Thanksgiving turkey, and trying to coordinate countless holiday events and parties, take the time to update your resume. This is especially pertinent if you’re going to be on the search for a new job.
Your resume is a document you should periodically update anyway, and it’s better to do it now than to wait until you’re either out of a job or presented with an opportunity and only have a copy of your resume from five years ago. Autumn is a great time to get started before life gets in the way and you find yourself rushing to put something together and apply.
November and December can be slow but valuable. If you’re looking for a seasonal job, you’re in luck. Many companies are hiring for the holidays. Plus, you never know when that may turn into a more permanent opportunity. However, with many employees and hiring managers taking time off and companies trying to squeeze the last bit out of their yearly budget, some industries may not see a hiring surge at the end of the year.
However, if you have your resume ready to go, you can take advantage of opportunities that do arise and be one of the first to get your resume in for consideration. In addition, parties and events can be a wonderful time to network and get your name (and resume) out there. Someone from your child’s winter concert or your spouse’s company party may have connections. If your resume is up-to-date, you won’t have to waste any time forwarding them a copy.
The New Year is a busy season. Companies are often trying to fill open positions that carried over from the previous year or from employees who left in the New Year to take other roles. They also have a new budget to work with and may have allotted funds to hire new positions. There can be a lot of competition, but, once again, if you updated your resume in the fall, it won’t take much time to tweak it and apply for various openings you find.
Give yourself peace of mind. Update your resume now so you don’t have to worry about finding time to do it amongst the chaos of the holidays. Allow yourself to enjoy the festivities knowing your resume is ready to go and will only need minor revisions to prepare it for submission. And if you are short on time – or simply don’t know where to start – hiring a professional resume writer can further reduce your stress.
