When crafting your resume, you want to create a strong impression on a hiring manager and make a clear connection for why you’re a good fit for the job. This can be challenging if you’re a new graduate, you’ve been unemployed for a while, you’re making a career change, or you’re trying to shift into a new role. A traditional resume may not provide you the amount of flexibility you want to really make yourself shine. On the other hand, functional resumes are not always viewed in a positive light.

Consider using a hybrid resume instead. This combines the best of both worlds. You have the standard format and style that employers prefer, yet you also have the opportunity to call attention to select skills they find desirable. Here are a few other benefits to keep in mind:

  • You can highlight skills. Add two or three bullet points to your summary of qualifications that target specific skills you want to emphasize. The rest of your resume should back these claims and show results and examples in context of the positions you’ve held.
  • You can tell a story. Being able to bring attention to certain skills can help bridge the gap between what you want to do and what you’ve been doing. Employers can get a better sense of how your experience has positioned you to assume this next role and what you bring to the table.
  • You can smooth transitions. If you’re trying to shift from one type of role or industry to another, being able to call out your competencies in a different way can show the transferability of these skills. Employers might not see right away the relevant skills you gleaned from your previous career, so you’re showing them right up front.
  • You can overcome limited experience. New graduates often have a lot of knowledge, but perhaps not a lot of professional experience. A hybrid resume allows you to showcase your skills and potential while still including what experience you do have. It can complement your education and training.

Be strategic in what qualifications you highlight. Pick 3 or 4 at the most; remember, you’re not creating a functional resume, you’re just borrowing the idea of it. Still present your job experience in reverse chronological order with relevant details about what you did and what was achieved. A hybrid resume can be an effective way to bridge gaps, make connections between your experience and new job pursuits, and create a stronger impression on employers.
